Often referred to as "Banana Fiber", ABACA FIBER (or Sinamay) comes from the same plant family as the banana tree, producing a fiber that is incredibly strong.
And it an amazingly versatile fiber.
Depending on how it is harvested & processed, it can be found as the favorite "go-to" textile for the traditional wedding dresses in the Philippines, or as a favorite of milliners for making wonderfully fanciful hats. However, it is also used for the siding & roofing on the huts that are still found in the more rural areas of the Philippines (& THAT is VERSATILE!)
We absolutely fell in love with this wonderful organic product, & brought it into Loose Ends in the form of 2" wide 'RIBBONS' & 19" wide'WRAPS' & a variety of other woven textiles. In the ABACA 'WRAPS' alone we have 21 different colors, & 27 colors in the ABACA 'RIBBONS'
And (being a big believer in "if a little is good, then a LOT is better") we brought in a HUGE amount of the ABACA 'WRAP' "Sand" since it was a natural color & could be painted any shade or hue you could imagine.

Using regular spray paint (Home Depot) I painted half of this piece "black" & the other half "canary yellow". I thought it was really interesting how the "black" allowed the asphalt background to show through much more than the "yellow" did, even more than the natural "Sand" of the unpainted part.

On a couple of pieces of "Sand" ABACA 'WRAP' I spray painted "red", "yellow", & "black"
(going from center to edges) to create this blended look.

A piece of "Sand" ABACA 'WRAP' that was spray painted metallic gold, then "distressed" (wrinkle & wadding up). It can now be opened back up for any of a million different projects, then just wadded back up & tossed in a box (or corner) until you want it again.
